Description
Portland Bill Lighthouse, captured in the glorious evening light as a landscape photograph by Chris Boulton. The Portland Bill lighthouse has been defending the coastline for hundreds of years from the Portland rush where the three wave patterns meet at the headland from East, West and France. The lighthouse features two lights, a white top light to warn shipping up to 18 nautical miles and a lower red light to warn shipping of the localised sandbanks. The lighthouse has recently been renovated with a modern led lamp system but still offers a majestic building with the romance and magical feeling that lighthouses seem to bring. This lighthouse also provided the inspiration to the Portland Bill stories for children featuring the adventures of the lighthouse keeper named Bill as they manage the lighthouse and still watchable on YouTube. This headland is a magical place to visit full of history and a key part of the jurassic coastline of southern England.
